🌴 Sawasdee, aspiring actors! I’m Robin Schroeter, a German actor and coach who’s spent over 20 years chasing dreams in Bangkok’s vibrant film industry. If you’ve ever wondered why someone would leave Europe for acting in Thailand, my latest YouTube vlog, “Why I Moved to Thailand to Act (My Story)”, spills the tea on my journey from Aachen, Germany, to starring in films like Hazard. Spoiler: it’s a wild ride of student films, visa hustles, and a love for Thailand’s film scene! Let’s dive into why acting in Thailand became my calling.
Why Thailand for Acting?
Back in Aachen, I was all about theater, but Germany’s film scene felt like a crowded BTS train at rush hour—too many actors, not enough roles. Then I discovered acting in Thailand. Bangkok was buzzing with Hollywood blockbusters, Bollywood epics, and Thai dramas, all needing expat faces like mine. The vibe was electric: less competition, diverse roles, and a welcoming industry. I read about shoots here and thought, “That’s my stage!” In my vlog, I share how this dream pulled me to Thailand, and why acting in Thailand is a game-changer for expats.
My First Steps in Bangkok
Landing in Bangkok 20 years ago with a suitcase and big dreams was chaos—think lost tourist meets wannabe star! Navigating visas and auditions was tough, but I hustled on a tourist visa, hitting workshops and theater events. My first big break came with All Soul Production, an artistic project that landed me a work visa. It wasn’t glamorous, but standing on that set, I knew I’d found my home. Acting in Thailand taught me resilience, and my vlog dives into those early, sweaty days of learning the ropes.
Building a Career: Education and Networking
To stay legal and grow, I got strategic with acting in Thailand. I enrolled in two master’s degrees—Business Administration and Directing at Chulalongkorn University—using educational visas to network and film student projects. Those unpaid student films? Pure gold! They built my showreel and led to roles like Gautamiputra Satakarni. Networking at Bangkok Community Theatre and workshops was key. In the vlog, I share how this hustle turned me into a working actor and coach, now teaching at MasterClass Studio.
